Lilith in Diablo 4, Explained

Who is Lilith in Diablo 4?

There’s just so much to say about Diablo IV. As one of the most eagerly awaited games of 2023, the series is finally returning to its dark, brooding roots.

And who do we have to thank for this spine-chilling new look? None other than the game’s main villain: Lilith. We first caught a glimpse of her in the announcement video three years ago, and now she’s making a devilish appearance in the closed beta.

So, let’s dive into the story of Diablo 4 Lilith – the Daughter of Hatred, the Queen of Succubus, and the beloved of Inarius. We’ll explore everything there is to know about this enigmatic character and what makes her tick in Diablo IV.

Greater Evils and Eternal Conflict

Eternal Conflict is pictured on the doors of Burning Hells.

Because the Diablo universe is so rich, there are a few pieces of information we need to go over before we tell Lilith’s story. These will help you understand why Lilith in Diablo IV is important.

There are seven most powerful demons in Hell of Diablo. These are divided into two:

  • Prime Evils: Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal.
  • Lesser Evils: Andariel, Azmodan, Belial, and Duriel.

As you can understand from their names, while the first group was stronger, the second group became weaker over time. But they all have their own armies and regions in Hell.

Because the existence of the universe depends on balance, the seven most powerful demons have only one purpose: to destroy and take over Heaven in Eternal Conflict.

This war between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells continues for endless years. Neither side can gain an advantage over the other. Until Inarius, a very powerful angel, is taken prisoner by Lilith.

Story of Lilith and Inarius

Lilith and Inarius is the definition of power couple in Diablo universe.

While Lilith and Inarius are on opposite sides, they both want one thing in common: to get away from Eternal Conflict. This common desire soon turns into love and helps the main story of the Diablo series begin.

This love story is no ordinary. Because both Lilith and Inarius are very important to their kind. Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, one of the most powerful demons of the Burning Hells. Inarius is one of the ancient and powerful angels of the High Heavens.

They both steal the Worldstone by recruiting like-minded angels and demons after them. With this stone, they create a new world called Sanctuary, where the Diablo series takes place. Their goal is to live happily ever after, away from everything, without fighting.

Of course, things don’t go the way they want. Children named Nephalem are born from the love of the couple. This new species has the powers of both angels and demons.

This makes them the most powerful beings known in the Diablo universe.

Since Lilith’s ultimate goal is to end Eternal Conflict completely, she wants to invade both heaven and hell with her Nephalems.

However, the angels and demons who are already with them are disturbed that the new species is so powerful. And they are trying to eradicate the Nephalem species by rising up.

Lilith Awakens With Anger

Nephalem (your character) is the most powerful being in this universe.

You can guess what comes next. Lilith does not welcome the uprising of angels and demons against her own children. Out of pure rage, she transforms into the fearsome one we know and kills all the rebellious angels and demons.

Although Inarius knows exactly what has become of the woman he loves, he cannot kill Lilith because of his love. Instead, he banishes her to the Void. The Void can be imagined as a realm of nothingness from which no being can easily escape.

After Inarius sends the woman he loves into the Void, he immediately begins to weaken his own children. Two important reasons are operative in this decision of Inarius:

  • Nephalem are uncontrollably powerful beings. This is a security problem for both angels and demons.
  • Empowering Nephalem means that the High Heavens and the Burning Hells focus their full attention on the Sanctuary.

After thousands of years, the Nephalem race gradually weakened, and the mortal human race as we know it emerged. The differences between the two species became smaller and smaller.

For this reason, in all Diablo games, it is not immediately clear who is a mortal and who is a Nephalem.

Thanks to this move by Inarius, an agreement was reached between the angels and the demons, and a promise was made that the Sanctuary would not be touched. Of course, the demons do not keep this promise.

It’s a good thing they do not. Otherwise, we would be unable to find demons to kill in the Diablo games.

Lilith in Diablo 4

That’s basically the storyline that connects Lilith to Diablo 4. Lucion, son of Mephisto and brother of Lilith say:

She is cunning and her mind is like a labyrinth. I wasn’t too sad when I learned, centuries later, that the angel had cast her out into the endless void, never to return. Well, ‘never’ is a relative term with her. Inarius should’ve known better. He should have slain her, but his kind always was too sentimental.

These words sum up the main villain of Diablo 4 very well. The game’s first announcement video showed how Lilith escaped from the Void. It all started when a group of people found themselves in a secret temple searching for gold.

The name of the priest we see in the trailers (and who we will probably see in the game as well) is Elias. He is one of the other characters and uses blood magic to free Lilith from the Void and help her regain control of the Sanctuary.

All Lilith Statue Locations (Altar of Lilith)

Lilith’s presence seems to be not limited to the story alone. Altars of Lilith, which we encountered for the first time in the Diablo IV closed beta, give players great buffs. That is, if you know where to find them.

You can find Lilith statues scattered all over the map. These statues look like mini versions of the game’s main villain. Each of them has a different effect, but when you interact with an Altar of Lilith, you can get one of the following buffs:

  • +2 Intelligence
  • +2 Willpower
  • +2 Dexterity
  • +2 Strength
  • +8 Max HP
  • +5 Obols Slots

The location that is playable in the Diablo IV beta is called Fractured Peaks. And there are a total of 28 Altars of Lilith waiting to be found here. You can access all Lilith locations from this guide.

Final Thoughts

We don’t know how much you’re looking forward to the game, but since we played the closed beta without getting bored, we can say that we can’t wait to see Diablo 4 Lilith and hear her story.

We’ll also see Inarius imprisoned in Hell by Mephisto years after he sent Lilith into the Void. We’re ready to listen to this sacred love story, witness the birth of Nephalem, and feel the dark Diablo atmosphere.
