Artist Spotlight! – Hiroya Hayashi

Welcome to today’s Artist Spotlight.

Volume1 – Episode 02

Introduction

I am Hiroya Hayashi, a Chinese exchange student studying at a vocational school in Japan. I aim to create high-quality work, so I devote my daily time to improving my skills.

As an exchange student, I have faced various challenges during my time in Japan, such as language and cultural differences. However, I have found that pursuing my passion for creating better work has helped me overcome these obstacles.

Through continuous learning and practice, I believe I can improve my abilities and create work that can positively impact the world. I am grateful for the opportunity to study in Japan and to be exposed to a new culture, which has expanded my perspective and allowed me to explore new creative avenues.

Why did you choose this theme?

The theme I chose for this work is a popular area located in Shinjuku, Tokyo, called “Omoide Yokocho.”

I decided to create a realistic piece.

The concept is based on a businessman drinking at an izakaya late at night, expressing a sense of loneliness through his silhouette. Omoide Yokocho has many izakayas, and I challenged myself to convey the atmosphere through the 3D environment creation.

What was enjoyable or challenging about doing the work this time?

Challenging aspect: To complete this piece, many software programs needed to work together. For example, the clothes were constructed in Marvelous Designer, and it was necessary to add “wind simulation” to express the organic form of the clothes.

Since nature is not perfect, there should be some flaws or imperfections, so I tried to avoid straight lines or perfectly parallel lines when modeling.

Additionally, what made me happy was being able to process the photos I took myself for the first time in Photoshop and generate Normal Maps and Roughness Maps, which resulted in good outcomes.

Where do you get inspiration from?

As a creator, I often work through the night alone to produce my pieces. I have been thinking about expressing this feeling in some form of artwork. The piece I created was a projection of my own emotions.

Who is your favorite artist?

I respect and admire the work of Qi Sheng Luo. He is a 3D artist based in Shangai, China.

You can take a look at his Artstation profile.

What is your future outlook, and what challenges would you like to take?

I want to create even more grandiose environments in the future. I don’t just want to be satisfied with making models, but I want to work with other tools, like Houdini, to create scenes with a story. If possible, I also want to study character rigging and create beautiful characters.

What software did you use this time?

Maya, MarvelousDesigner, Substance Painter, Megascans, Photoshop, and Arnold.
