The Last of Us Remake

What can we expect from The Last of Us remake, and what did Naughty Dog have to say at the Summer Game Fest? Find out here.

One of the most beloved games of all time, The Last of Us is being remade for the PS5, much to the excitement of fans. So, what can we expect from the remake, and what did Naughty Dog have to say at the Summer Game Fest?

Official Announcement of The Last of Us Remake at Summer Game Fest

The Last of Us remake was announced at the Summer Game Fest 2022, by Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog. The news was leaked early, accidentally, by Sony themselves, with an eagle-eyed user spotting the listing on the PlayStation Direct site (since removed). So while it wasn’t much of a surprise by the time the official announcement arrived, it was still exciting to see glimpses of the remake.

Expanded accessibility options from The Last of Us Part 2 will be included in the remake. This opens up the first game for a new wave of gamers who couldn’t experience it before.

While we got to see some side-by-side comparisons of the PS5 version, the remake will also be making its way to PC at some point in the future, although we don’t know when just yet.

The Last of Us Remake Graphical Upgrade

We got to see the differences between the original and the remake, in a series of side-by-side comparisons showing the upgrade to Joel and Ellie, as well as wider shots in the game.

Graphically, how do they compare? Ellie and Joel are faithfully reproduced: they still look like the characters we know and love, and they’re more in line with the second game, but the remake should make the most of the PS5’s capabilities. Modernized Gameplay

A blog post revealed there will be three editions of the remake to choose from:

  • The Last of Us Part I Standard Edition – $69.99 USD

  • The Last of Us Part I Digital Deluxe – $79.99 USD

  • The Last of Us Part I Firefly Edition – $99.99 USD (sold out at the time of writing)

What Will Each Edition Include?

The Digital Deluxe edition contains a whole bunch of extra features and early unlocks. Increased crafting and healing speed skill, 9mm reload speed increase, rifle clip capacity increase, explosive arrows gameplay modifier, and the dither punk filter are extras that many fans will be willing to spend an extra $10 for.

Plus, you’ll also get speedrun mode and six weapon skins, and improved controls/accessibility options.

The Firefly Edition, which sold out incredibly quickly, contained everything in the Digital Deluxe edition, plus a steelbook case and The Last of Us: American Dreams comic books with new cover art.

The DLC, Left Behind

All versions will include the DLC, the prequel story Left Behind, which follows the relationship between Ellie and Riley. If you haven’t got round to playing Left Behind, this is a good opportunity to do it.

The Last of Us Standalone Multiplayer

Also included in The Last of Us presentation by Naughty Dog was the announcement of a standalone multiplayer game. It will star brand-new characters, with a whole new story. We don’t know much about this yet, other than the fact that it appears to be set in San Francisco. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out more.

A Mixed Reception on The Last of Us Remake

Some gamers had mixed feelings about this announcement, with some gamers scratching their heads about it. After all, The Last of Us Part 1 already has a remaster, released for the PS4 in 2014. So why do we need the remake?

However, the obvious advancement from the PS3 to the PS5 is fascinating, at least from a technical standpoint. Plus, players can enjoy expanded accessibility options, improved controls, and extra features, too. It’s not a total overhaul, but it’s definitely a step up.

The Last of Us remake is bound to do well, and many people will jump on the opportunity to experience the original story with implemented modernized gameplay. Plus, for those of us who don’t own a PS5, the PC version is something to look forward to at a later date.
