A brand-new action-adventure game from Square Enix, Valkyrie Elysium, is coming in 2022.
A new action RPG, Valkyrie Elysium was revealed during PlayStation’s latest State of Play, with an announcement trailer giving us an exciting glimpse of the game.
Here’s everything we know about Valkyrie Elysium so far:
A Unique World Based On Norse Mythology
Valkyrie Elysium is not the first game in the acclaimed Valkyrie series from Square Enix. There are actually three main-series titles in the much-loved Valkyrie series, as well as a spinoff mobile game (Valkyrie Anatomia). We’ll go into those in more detail in a moment. The key detail here is that Valkyrie Elysium is a standalone game, meaning you won’t have to invest time in the other games to enjoy this one.
Valkyrie Elysium an action-RPG, with a fast-paced and unique combat system that includes a unique combo system. Of course, it’s coming from Square Enix, and the epic story and character designs feel familiar to fans of the Final Fantasy franchise, although it’s too early to tell how far those similarities stretch. Characters from the Valkyrie series have appeared in Final Fantasy games, so there’s already a bit of a crossover between the two.
This Valkyrie game is set in the past, where Ragnarok (the End Times) is coming. A lone Valkyrie, created by the All-Father, is on an epic quest to save the world as it crumbles around her. It’s hinted that she will uncover some shocking truths along the way.
How Does It Fit into Valkyrie Profile series?
This is a completely standalone game from Square Enix. You don’t need to know anything about the previous games (which exist on handheld and mobile platforms) to understand what is going on. Of course, we haven’t seen the full game yet, so it’s unclear whether there will be easter eggs or nods to characters from other games.

The Valkyrie Profile Series
The Valkyrie Profile series is known for interesting gameplay and a hefty dose of melancholy. The Valkyrie series depicts a series of female figures, known as valkyries, warriors who fight for justice in an unjust world. As is typical for Square Enix games, the series is known for having an engaging and interesting storyline.

If you do want to go back and experience the other Valkyrie games in the series while you wait, you’ll have to dig out your old consoles: Valkyrie Profile was released on the original PlayStation in 1999 (to critical acclaim), with subsequent entries appearing later. Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmenia was released in 2006 for the PS2, and Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume followed in 2009 for the Nintendo DS.
Mobile Games
There was a mobile game, Valkyrie Anatomia: The Origin, but service for this game stopped in 2020 (2021 in Japan). You can play Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth, an enhanced port of the first game, on iOS and Android. It has good reviews, although the controls are a little clunky.
However, you don’t need to play these games to understand the lore in Valkyrie Elysium, but it could be a fun way to while away the hours until the latest installment!
Valkyrie Elysium: A New Classic From Square Enix?
Hopes are high for Valkyrie Elysium. Action-RPG fans are desperate for a new title to sink their teeth into, and the announcement trailer at State of Play 2022 gave us a tantalizing glimpse of what is to come.
We can expect innovative RPG gameplay, a unique world inspired by Norse mythology, magical abilities, an original story, a fast-paced combat system, and an interesting fantasy world. You’ll play as a brave warrior, entrusted with the fate of this rich world, uncovering a hidden truth along the way.

You’ll be able to bring in warriors who’ll join you on your quest to prevent impending destruction, and they will help you to fight powerful foes along the way. It has that classic Square Enix vibe: a dramatic story, a beautiful landscape, and interesting characters.
What About Gameplay?
We don’t know much about the gameplay for this new action RPG just yet. Guess we’ll find out in the coming Valkyrie Elysium release date. The trailer shows you fighting your way through the doomed world, with fast-paced combat. The world, inspired by Norse mythology, looks rich and interesting, with beauty in the ruined land. It is hinted that you will have to make a choice about how you want the story to go, with a potential moral decision to make.
Incredible Soundtracks
Composer Motoi Sakuraba has worked on all of the Valkyrie Profile games and will continue to do so for the latest game in the Valkyrie series. The series is known for the incredible music by the legendary Motoi Sakuraba, so it will be exciting to hear some new music from him when the game drops.
Valkyrie Elysium Release Date
When is the Valkyrie Elysium release date? We don’t actually know yet. So far the date is set for ‘2o22’, which is pretty vague. We’re only halfway through the year, so hopefully, Square Enix and developers Soleil Ltd won’t make the decision to push it back (although of course, I’d rather have a polished game than a rushed one).
Soleil, the Developers Behind Valkyrie Elysium
Japanese developers Soleil Ltd have been working on this brand new standalone adventure. Based in Toyko, they have created some great games, including Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time (PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC) Devil’s Third (Wii U, PC), Ninjala (Nintendo Switch), and more.
Developer Values
Soleil Ltd is passionate about creating unique, creative titles from Japan, and they are currently working on an original high-end action online multiplayer game, codenamed Project Edo, alongside their work on Valkyrie Elysium.
According to Soleil’s CEO, they aim to ‘create warm memorable moments for those that play our games’, which seems perfect for the latest entry in the Valkyrie series.

The response from the latest State of Play event has been positive, with Square Enix fans getting excited at the potential for new, exciting gameplay and a story about humanity and their encounters with the gods.
