Purgatory and ThinkingMan Statue

Please tell us more about your works “Purgatory” and “ThinkingMan Statue.”

Purgatory 煉獄

Purgatory

My work consistently portrays the systems and phenomena that flow through this world. This particular piece is centered around the overarching themes of the cycle of life and death in the activity of living organisms.

The piece features a collection of various animals arranged to form a larger image, with each individual life transcending beyond its own entity, cycling and transforming into different forms of life, ascending to the heavens.

Similarly, “Flower Snake” expresses the internal cycle of life through the use of plant and snake motifs. The snake rests on a tree, with the torso cut off and replaced by a flower, representing the energy of life within.

I used Houdini for abstract and naturally arranged shapes, avoiding as much manual crafting as possible. Even now, while designing and sculpting, I consider the balance between realism and the analog feeling of manual work.

However, when creating these two pieces, I focused more on realism than I do now. Therefore, I feel that the shapes I created then, taking advantage of the characteristics of CG, were different from the pleasure of doing everything manually.

Which software did you utilize for these specific projects?

Houdini and ZBrush.

Creative Process

Where do you get inspiration from?

During this period, almost all of my works were inspired by natural things, living organisms, the cycle of life and death, and the soul.

I drew inspiration from everything that expresses the “divine,” from the cycle of life on Earth to the movement of stars on a cosmic scale.

works were inspired by natural things, living organisms, the cycle of life and death, and the soul.

While using these big themes as a base, I also drew inspiration from small things such as music, movies, anime, and various emotions that I experienced in life at that time. I had some experience with music before, and I often come up with worldviews and designs that expand in my mind from the sounds.

Who is your favorite artist?

When it comes to favorite artists, I can’t think of anyone off the top of my head, but I enjoy works such as Disney’s Fantasia, A24 films, Jordan Peele’s works, darkly humorous mysteries, and science fiction like Black Mirror.

What are your aspirations for the future, and what specific challenges do you hope to undertake?

You can say, “Sculpting and creating characters have been one of the skills I mastered in my 20s. Going forward, I aim to be an artist who can create various stories and works that resonate with people’s hearts in different forms as a content creator.”
